THE HISTORY
The Fleurieu has the land, the produce, the wildlife and its people living in harmony. The aboriginal Kauna people enjoyed the unspoilt habitat in ancient times. As did the French explorer Baudin who named the Peninsula. The rolling vine-covered hills in the McLaren Vale region, in the centre of the region, feed over 60 small, very individual wineries. The region's wines are described as the middle palate of Australia because they produce soft full-flavoured wines.
The vineyards snake down to the tumbling surf on the coast, where sea creatures such as whales and Blue penguins thrive.
The area enjoys a Mediterranean type climate influenced by the St. Vincent's Gulf only 6 km away.
THE TOUR
The tour departs Adelaide and first takes us south to the picturesque McLaren Vale Wine Region dotted over 50 small to medium wineries. It is situated near the coast hence the area has a distinctly Mediterranean feel.
Tours of the McLaren Vale wine region feature some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. Wineries include Wirra Wirra, d'Arenberg, Coriole and the historic Hardy's winery. Other attractions include the Olive Grove & possible cheese and wine trail. We head south to the coastal town of Goolwa, once a thriving paddle steamer port. Then enjoy lunch at the charming Flying Fish Café or Aquacaf overlooking the sea. After lunch we travel on the beach up to the Mouth of the River and travel to scenic lookouts in search of the Southern Right Whales that visit our shores with their newborn calves from June onwards. Interest depending we may also visit one of the local Brew Houses down near the sea.
We call into Victor Harbor and take a ride along the causeway, which links the mainland to Granite Island on Australia's only horse-drawn tram. See the fascinating Blue penguins through an interpretive center or view them at dusk as they make their way back to the island.
Return to Adelaide or stay overnight in Goolwa*(see notes).

We journey south to the wine region of McLaren Vale, famous for producing world class Shiraz. Enjoy visits to a number of unique character wineries before lunch on the veranda at d‟Arenberg winery overlooking the Vale. Perhaps see a pod of whales close to shore and if not visit the whale centre at Victor Harbour. Then onto the native wildlife park followed by a leisurely afternoon spent strolling around the historic township of Port Elliot before settling into the comfort of Trafalgar House. In the evening enjoy fine local produce in this charming seaside village, alternatively we may stay at Authenticity if you prefer a more luxury health retreat experience (Optional extra, evening tour to see the fairy penguins at sunset).
Day 2: Goolwa, Coorong & Poltalloch
From the historic river port town of Goolwa we travel to view the mouth of the mighty Murray River teeming with bird life. Visit the quaint antiques town of Strathalbyn for morning tea and then to another premium wine growing region at Langhorne creek for a picnic lunch amongst the vines. We cross the Murray River on a punt at Wellington and head south along the coast road to the Coorong Wilderness Lodge at Salt Creek, which is owned and run by the local native Aboriginal people set right in the heart of the Coorong. Here we will tour the pelican rookeries before heading nearby to Poltalloch Station, overlooking Lake Alexandrina.
Day 3: Kingston & Robe
We head south along the Limestone coast which has claimed many ships over the past century and a half through. We pass through Kingston famous for its giant rock lobster and onto a small coastal wine region called Cape Jaffa for a tasting We then make our way to Robe, one of the jewels of the Limestone coast. This small historic fishing village was a landing port for the Chinese during the gold rush last century and boasts beautiful beaches, spectacular coastline, historic buildings and a sheltered harbour.
Day 4: Robe & Penola
We begin with breakfast at the Wild Mulberry café and we then head east to visit a working farm with sheep, cattle and crops run by a local family. Onto Penola, famed as the home of Mother Mary McKillop who began the order of Saint Josephs. Penola is attached to the world famous Coonawarra wine region and is surrounded by premium wine grapes, particularly cabernet sauvignon.
Visit a couple of the more famous wineries to taste the local produce before settling into your peaceful accommodation among the vines. Lunch at Hollicks Winery.
Day 5: Boolagoon, Naracoorte, Coonawarra & Padthaway
Visit a large modern winery with great views over the vines before visiting the birdlife sanctuary of Boolagoon and venture out onto the board walk to the hide to view migratory water birds. Visit the heritage listed Naracoorte caves and enjoy a picnic lunch. We then make our way through the newly developed wine region of Koppamurra with its undulating rolling red hills a contrast to the flat Coonawarra region. We head to Padthaway Estate an historic icon nested among vineyards.
Day 6: Padthaway, River Murray & Adelaide
Relax and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon before dinner within this beautiful old heritage listed homestead.A relaxing breakfast overlooking the delightful garden is followed by a brief tour of the estate. We then head west along the 90 mile desert a farming area developed in the 1940‟s and back to the river Murray for a picnic overlooking the water. Unfortunately it is then time to make our way back to Adelaide to arrive in the city of churches late afternoon. 5 day 4 nights package also available
